Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is a weekly payment for those who, having reached school leaving age, are planning to continue in post-compulsory education. Your family has to meet the qualifying income requirements.
EMA gives financial support to eligible 16 to 19 year olds who want to continue learning on non-advanced courses.
You may also be eligible for EMA if you are on an Activity Agreement placement.
There are Autumn and Winter intakes depending on when your birthday falls.
Every academic year you need to complete the following:
- an EMA application form
- a learning agreement
It is paid in addition to Child Benefit and other benefits.
Young people on Job Seekers’ Allowance or on government supported training schemes are not eligible for EMAs.
